Quinn Packaging announced that it will invest more than 3 million euros (2.2 million pounds) in a new PET sheet extrusion line.

The machine will be provided by the Austrian company SML, which specializes in manufacturing high-performance extrusion equipment, and will be equipped with the Vacurema recycling system from EREMA, a patented technology that allows the use of post-consumer or recycled PET flakes to make food contact approved PET sheet.

With this investment, the Irish rigid packaging company will increase its production capacity when the machine is fully operational in mid-2016, and further develop its PET sheet and meat tray business.

The company has 19,000 square meters of production facilities and more than 140 employees in Ballyconnell, Co Cavan, and produces a series of plastic packaging products, including rigid packaging for the food industry (meat/poultry trays, instant trays, mushroom boxes, dairy products) Spread containers and thin gauge sheets for forming, filling and sealing applications), and flexible packaging (shrink/stretch hoods and silage packaging) for industrial and agricultural applications.

Karl Stoeger, managing director of SML, added that the line specification uses the Vacurema system for the main extruder and uses SML's single-screw technology for the co-extrusion of the surface layer.

"The high-volume reel stacking and downstream equipment, as well as the additional lamination capabilities of functional films, will ensure that Quinn's expanding packaging business provides a flexible and highest quality paper supply."
